We’re on Thin Ice but with a solid foundation

Thin Ice is the third outing for Bill Kemp, a character first created by Desmond Bagley way back in the early 1970’s only to languish in an unpublished novel buried deep in a Boston archive for over forty-five years.

He was finally prepared for publication by Michael Davies, a talented script-writer and journalist, who was tasked by Harper Collins with curating the original manuscript for publication. That title became the best-seller Domino Island.

Such was the success of a new Bagley novel that it’s sequel Outback was commissioned, this time as an original story by Michael. It took our new hero, Kemp, to Australia and the murderous heat of the continent’s famous hinterland. It was also released to mark the centenary of Bagley’s birth.

Now, in 2024 the third and final novel in the Bill Kemp trilogy has arrived: Thin Ice. This time our hero is tasked with collecting an unknown package from Austria and the method used to get him to play along is simple and potentially deadly: Kidnap. From there things get more and more complex, duplicitous and deadly by the page.

Thin Ice has some genuinely lovely references to its Desmond Bagley heritage, some are subtle while others very obvious and it’s fun spotting them. To get you started you will see that the novel is divided into three parts and each is named after one of Bagley’s novels. A leading character in the story is also named after one from the novel The Freedom Trap, and Kemp’s view of the Cold War and spies in general is the same as hero Alan Stewart from Running Blind.

The attention to detail within the story is up there with Bagley’s own research standards and you can feel the cold seeping into your fingers as you read!

As much as anything we learn the female is as deadly as the male in this fast-moving and exciting story of a culture clash that divided the world and sparked decades of suspicion, conspiracy, conniving and assassination.

A splendid finale to the Bill Kemp trilogy honouring the work and legacy of Desmond Bagley.

Thin Ice - New Bill Kemp novel

Tomorrow, October 24th, is publication day for Michael Davies’s new book – “Thin Ice”.

This new story once more features Bill Kemp, Bagley’s insurance investigator, who’d been languishing in an unpublished manuscript deep in Boston University’s archive for decades. Philip Eastwood of The Bagley Brief website dug him out and the novel “Domino Island” followed, curated by Michael. Such was the success of a new Bagley story that its sequel “Outback” was commissioned.

“Thin Ice” is now Bill Kemp’s third outing. I haven’t seen a copy so like me you’ll have to head on over to Amazon UK – or your local book store – to find out more.

Wicked Spirits

Harper-Collins have just published a new anthology of spooky stories, probably in time for the Halloween season, called Wicked Spirits. The contents are supernatural mysteries by well-known authors that were “previously unpublished”. It includes the short story The House of the Lions by Bagley, about the strangeness at his then home, Hay Hill in Totnes.

This story isn’t “previously unpublished” as stated. It appeared as an extra in a double-book edition – The Spoilers & Juggernaut – in 2009.

Night of Error

... was the author's penultimate novel and explored the subject of Manganese Nodule mining from the deep sea-floor. To show how current this topic still is there's an interesting article by the BBC on "dark oxygen" emanating from this source. Here's a link to the article:

Spring 2024

How is the weather with you? In Bagley’s homeland it has been a wet and relatively cold Spring so far. What better time than to keep warm and dive into an exciting adventure in far off lands and escape from it all.

There are some nice deals on Desmond Bagley novels over at Amazon UK right now:

The High Citadel and Landslide double-book Kindle edition for just £2.99

The Snow Tiger and Night of Error double-book Kindle edition for just £2.99

The Vivero Letter Kindle edition for just £2.99

The Enemy Kindle edition for just £2.99

Interesting trivia …

Most of the published versions of Running Blind use a signature Land Rover 88 series 2A in the cover art, but of the incorrect type for the story …

Our heroes trek across the Icelandic hinterland using the Series 2 long-wheelbase – LWB – version, large enough for them to sleep in when necessary, whereas the cover art usually features the short-wheelbase version. Nowhere near large enough for purpose. Surprised the publishers and artists haven’t picked-up on this!

Thin Ice book cover

We have to remember these new novels - Outback and Thin Ice - are not written by Desmond Bagley, they are only using a draft character he never actually published, however readers might be interested in this new, on-going series.

As promised here is the final book cover for Thin Ice:

Sadly this novel - on first appearances and I've not seen an ARC or proof copy - seems to be aping the famous novel of Bagley - Running Blind. There is a certain cheesiness about the tag-line. I doubt Bagley would ever have suggested his hero might "save the world".

Publication date has been moved back from August this year to October 24th.

UPDATE ON THE NEW NOVEL – THIN ICE

We have to remember the new novels – Outback and now Thin Ice – were not written by Desmond Bagley, they are only using a draft character he never actually published, with their name changed. However fans and thriller-readers alike should be very interested in this new and final title to the trilogy honouring his work. The excitement continues …

As promised here is the final book cover and Amazon UK link for the new novel – Thin Ice:

This tale – on first appearances and I’ve not seen an ARC or proof copy – seems to be aping the famous novel of Bagley – Running Blind, especially with the cover. There is a certain cheesiness about the tag-line here too. Bagley was never so arrogant as to suggest his hero might “save the world”. Although we should bear in mind this is probably just the publisher’s spin rather than the author’s intent as Michael is a true, long-term Bagley fan.

Publication date has been moved back from August this year to October 24th.
